Description
In Shona lore, beautiful and mystical water spirits called njuzu inhabit all lakes and rivers throughout Africa. These water spirits are the sacred teachers for ngangas, also known as shamans or healers. According to legend, the njuzu will lure a chosen child into the water to teach him or her the sacred knowledge of divining and healing. Later, the child is released by the powerful water spirit and returned to their village where he or she will carry out the sacred duties as the healer or shaman for all the tribal community. So, whenever a Shona passes a river or lake, praise is offered to the gentle and powerful water spirit for her healing arts.
